Treviso, February 15, 2024 – SolidWorld was amongst the protagonists of Motore Italia 2024, the event organized by Class Agorà, dedicated to companies that “make the country move forward” with their innovative capacity. Engineer Roberto Rizzo, Chairman and CEO of SolidWorld Group, spoke in the first panel entitled «Technology & Innovation. Conceive, design, build in 3D” in which the manager explained the role that AI will play in Italian industry. A positive outlook which, according to a recent survey by Il Sole 24 Ore, belongs to the majority of Italian top managers. In fact, 86% of senior executives interviewed by the Italian financial newspaper expressed optimism regarding the management of AI in Italian companies. And 74% overall declares that they are in fact investing in generative artificial intelligence: a figure well above the global average, which stands at 59%.

Interviewed by Motore Italia and Class Cnbc journalists, Rizzo explained that AI will be a protagonist in the industry of the future, in synergy with 3D technologies, one of the three pillars of SolidWorld Group together with biomedical and solar solutions. The starting point of Rizzo’s reasoning is the creation of the digital twin, the 3D digital reproduction of the prototype of a new product to be developed for a certain company, be it a car, a bag or a pair of glasses or other objects. In fact, the digital twin is the model that the 3D printer takes as a reference to start creating objects. And this is where AI comes in «In the design phase of the digital twin, artificial intelligence brings great advantages – stated Rizzo – It is able to manage all the data, all the experience that the company has gained up to that moment, like an archivist capable of exploiting all the information in its possession at 100%».

Often, in fact, some knowledge gained by a company over the years gets lost. This occurs because, for example, people within it change, or because some projects are set aside without the possibility of recovery. Problems that do not arise if, in the creation phase of the digital twin, artificial intelligence systems are used, i.e. systems capable of managing all the information in the archive of a certain company. For this reason, SolidWorld has begun to equip Cad software – the programs necessary for 3D design – with an AI omponent and will focus even more decisively on artificial intelligence in its products.

Furthermore, for SolidWorld the most innovative field of application of AI applied to the design of three-dimensional models has already materialized with Electrospider, the 3D printer capable of replicating human cellular tissues and organ parts. «To achieve this result – Rizzo explained to Motore Italia – we had to combine a large amount of data derived from axial tomographies of the organs and magnetic resonance imaging. It would not have been possible to create the digital twin of the organ to be sent to print without AI».

Furthermore, with a good model developed through AI it also becomes easier to put into practice the concept of “additive nufacturing”, possible thanks to 3D printers. In fact, this process allows one to save money in the physical creation of the models, since by breaking down the digital twin into layers, they recreate it in reality by proceeding layer by layer. Therefore, only the material strictly necessary to complete the object is used, without waste. Nonetheless, a well-designed 3D model thanks to AI becomes indispensable for anyone who wishes to rely on this type of manufacturing
